Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not just his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
