Each time a prominent honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- Another creative title was excluded that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
