The UK and US have forged a key trade agreement that will ensure no import taxes on UK medicine shipments entering the US market.

Key Provisions of the Pact

As part of the deal, the UK has pledged to boost spending on drugs through the NHS. This commitment ensures that duties on these crucial goods will stay at nothing for a period of the next three years.

This agreement follows earlier warnings to significantly raise duties on branded drug imports, with figures discussed up to 100%.

"This arrangement with the Britain strengthens the worldwide climate for innovative medicines and establishes much-needed fairness to transatlantic medicine commerce," an announcement declared.

Commercial Impact

Drugs are one of the the United Kingdom's largest exports to the America, which is by far the largest destination for leading UK drugmakers.

Export figures reveal that in the one-year period prior to the third quarter, the UK exported medicines valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This figure represented a significant portion of British export trade in that span.

"This agreement protects work, stimulates investment and facilitates the UK to become a international leader for life sciences," a minister remarked.

Specific NHS Changes

The deal includes several specific pledges from the UK:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will increase the price threshold at which it considers new medicines to be prohibitively costly by a quarter.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a target to increase total NHS spending on drugs from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6% over the next decade.
  • Payback Limit: The amount drug companies must return to the NHS to control costs will be restricted at fifteen percent. Previously, refunds were more than twenty percent.

Recent Tensions

The deal follows a protracted row between the pharmaceutical industry and the ministers over spending levels and NHS adoption.

These tensions were heightened by assertions that US customers were charged significantly more for the identical medicines than people in the UK and Europe.

Over the last 18 months, several major pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been halted or cancelled, while major investments have been directed toward American operations.

One official acknowledged that the NHS needed to increase expenditure on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had decreased as a proportion of its overall budget over the past decade.
